RRB ALP Educational Qualification 2026
The Assistant Loco Pilot is a highly technical and demanding role. Therefore, a basic high school education is not sufficient on its own.
Candidates must possess specific technical training from recognized institutions to handle the mechanical and electrical complexities of a locomotive.
The educational criteria laid out in the CEN 01/2026 notification are rigid, and you must hold the final certificates by the application closing date.
10th + ITI Eligibility
The most common pathway for candidates applying to the ALP post is through industrial training. You must have passed your Matriculation or SSLC (10th standard).
In addition to this basic schooling, you must possess an ITI certificate from recognized institutions affiliated with either the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) or the State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT).
Alternatively, candidates who have completed their Matriculation along with a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the specified trades are equally eligible.
List of ITI Trades
Your ITI certification must specifically belong to one of the approved technical trades. Certificates in trades outside of this official list will not be accepted. The approved trades are:
- Fitter
- Electrician
- Instrument Mechanic
- Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic
- Mechanic (Radio & TV)
- Electronics Mechanic
- Mechanic (Motor Vehicle)
- Wireman
- Tractor Mechanic
- Armature & Coil Winder
- Mechanic (Diesel)
- Heat Engine
- Turner
- Machinist
- Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic
Diploma Eligibility
If you do not have an ITI background but have pursued a polytechnic or diploma route, you are still eligible to apply. You must have passed Matriculation/SSLC and completed a three-year Diploma from a recognized institution. The diploma must be in one of the following engineering disciplines:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
A combination of various streams from these specific engineering disciplines is also perfectly acceptable.
Engineering Degree Eligibility
Candidates possessing higher technical education are also welcome to apply for the ALP post. If you hold a Degree in Engineering (B.E. or B.Tech) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering from a recognized university or institution, this will be accepted in lieu of the three-year Diploma.
Important Qualification Rules
- Qualification must be completed before the last date: You must possess the final required educational and technical qualifications from a recognized Board/University/Institute on or before the closing date for the submission of applications (14.06.2026).
- Awaiting results not eligible: If you have appeared for your final semester or final year exams and are waiting for the results, you are not eligible to apply. Provisional or regular certificates must contain a date of issue on or before the cutoff date.
- Only recognized institutes accepted: Your ITI, Diploma, or Degree must be strictly from an institution recognized by the relevant government educational authorities (NCVT, SCVT, UGC, AICTE, etc.).
RRB ALP Age Limit 2026
The Railway Recruitment Board sets a precise age window for candidates to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the rigors of railway service while still having a long career ahead of them.
Basic Age Limit
The crucial date for calculating your age for this recruitment cycle is July 1, 2026 (01-07-2026).
| Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
| 18 Years | 30 Years |
For general (Unreserved) and EWS candidates, this means your date of birth should fall between July 2, 1996, and July 1, 2008.
RRB ALP Age Relaxation 2026
The Ministry of Railways provides upper age limit relaxations for specific communities and categories, subject to the submission of valid, requisite certificates during Document Verification.
| Category | Relaxation |
| OBC-NCL | 3 Years (Upper age limit becomes 33 years) |
| SC/ST | 5 Years (Upper age limit becomes 35 years) |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years (UR & EWS), 6 years (OBC-NCL), 8 years (SC/ST) after deducting the length of military service from their actual age. |
| Railway Staff | Serving Group ‘C’ and erstwhile Group ‘D’ staff with minimum 3 years of service get relaxation up to 40 years of age (UR/EWS), 43 years (OBC), and 45 years (SC/ST). |
| Widowed/Divorced Women | Women who are widowed, divorced, or judicially separated and not remarried get relaxation up to 35 years of age (UR/EWS), 38 years (OBC), and 40 years (SC/ST). |
(Note: Course Completed Act Apprentices and candidates working in Quasi-Administrative offices of the Railway also have specific age relaxations as detailed in the official CEN).

RRB ALP Medical Standards 2026
Working as an Assistant Loco Pilot involves ensuring the safety of thousands of passengers and high-value freight.
Therefore, candidates called for Document Verification will have to undergo rigorous medical fitness tests conducted by the Railway Administration. The ALP post strictly demands an A-1 Medical Standard. Candidates found medically unsuitable for A-1 will not be given any alternative appointment.
Vision Requirements
Visual acuity is the most critical medical parameter for an ALP. The requirements under the A-1 standard are stringent.
| Test | Requirement |
| Distant Vision | 6/6, 6/6 without glasses. Must pass the fogging test (must not accept +2D). |
| Color Vision | Must pass the strict test for Color Vision. Color blindness is a strict disqualifier. |
| Binocular Vision | Must pass the test for Binocular Vision. |
| Night Vision | Must pass the test for Night Vision. |
| Other Vision Tests | Must have standard Field of Vision and Mesopic Vision. Near Vision must be Sn: 0.6, 0.6 without glasses. |
Is Lasik Allowed in RRB ALP?
Candidates who have undergone Lasik surgery or any other surgical procedure to correct refractive errors are strictly not eligible for the post of ALP.
The online application features a built-in self-screening validation.
You will also have to download a medical report from the application portal, get it signed by an Eye Specialist and a General Physician, and submit it on the day of your Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT).
If it is discovered at any stage that you have suppressed information regarding corrective eye surgery, your candidature will be instantly rejected.
Other Medical Requirements
- Physically fit in all respects: Beyond vision, candidates must be in good general health, free from any physical disability that might interfere with the efficient performance of an ALP’s duties. This includes checking for chronic systemic illnesses, diabetes, and hypertension.
- Railway medical examination mandatory: Submitting the initial medical declaration is provisional. All empanelled candidates must pass the final, detailed medical examination conducted directly by Railway Medical Authorities as per the Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM).
Who Is Not Eligible for RRB ALP?
To save time and prevent future disqualification, review this list carefully. You are not eligible if you belong to any of the following groups:
- Candidates without the required technical qualification (ITI, Diploma, or Degree in specified streams).
- Candidates with certificates from unrecognized institutions or boards.
- Candidates who have undergone Lasik or any other corrective eye surgery.
- Candidates whose final exam results are awaited as of the application closing date.
- Medically unfit candidates who do not meet the stringent A-1 vision and physical standards.
- Candidates who submit multiple applications to different RRBs or the same RRB.
- Candidates currently debarred by any RRB/RRC or dismissed from government service.
Important Points Regarding RRB ALP Eligibility
- Only one RRB allowed: You can apply to only one Railway Recruitment Board. Exercising this option is final; submitting multiple applications will lead to total disqualification and permanent debarment.
- Documents verified during DV: Eligibility during the application stage is accepted provisionally based on your self-declarations. Comprehensive scrutiny of original age, caste, and educational certificates occurs only during Document Verification (DV).
- False information can cancel candidature: If it is found at any stage of recruitment, or even after appointment, that you have provided incorrect data or suppressed material facts, you will be removed from service summarily and face legal action.
- Medical fitness mandatory: Passing the CBTs and CBAT does not guarantee a job. Final appointment is entirely subject to passing the Railway’s official Medical Fitness Test.
