RRB NTPC Recruitment Details: Notification, Vacancy, Eligibility, Apply Online

The RRB Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) exam is hands down your biggest opening if you want a reliable desk or supervisory role in Indian Railways this year.

We are talking about both Graduate & Undergraduate posts here—everything from sitting in an AC office as a typist to running an entire station as a Station Master.

However, do not let the “non-technical” label fool you.

The CBT-based recruitment process is an absolute marathon.

We are going to unpack the exact rules from the official RRB document here, just so you avoid making any mistake on your application. Also, if you want to look at other departments or technical roles later, just check out our Railway jobs section to see the full picture.

For now, let’s focus entirely on NTPC.

When the official PDF arrives, you are going to see a big table of numbers.

But, do not just look at the grand total.

The RRB splits NTPC into two entirely different educational blocks.

Undergraduate Posts (12th Pass)

If you just finished your 12th standard, you are eligible for Level 2 and Level 3 posts.

This includes roles like;

Junior Clerk cum Typist,

Accounts Clerk cum Typist,

Trains Clerk, and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk.

Graduate Posts (Degree Holders) If you have a university degree, you have better opportunities. You can apply for all the Undergraduate posts, PLUS the Level 5 and Level 6 posts.

This includes;

Goods Train Manager (formerly Goods Guard),

Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk,

Senior Clerk cum Typist, and the highly respected Station Master.

Zone-wise Vacancy

Here is a rule: You can only apply to ONE single RRB zone (like RRB Chennai, RRB Allahabad, or RRB Mumbai).

Once you submit that form, your zone is locked permanently. You have to look at the annexure in the official notification, find your category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS), and see exactly how many seats are open in your specific zone.

Eligibility for RRB NTPC

Following eligibility criteria is set by RRB and if you don’t meet, you will be disqualifed during document verification stage, no matter even if you have topped the exams.

12th Pass / Graduation

Your educational results must be officially declared on or before the closing date of the online application.

If you are in your final year of college and waiting for your final semester marksheet, the RRB plainly states you are not eligible to apply. Period.

Age Limit & Age Relaxation

The baseline age is calculated as of a specific date set by the RRB (usually July 1st or January 1st of the recruitment year).

  • Undergraduate Posts: 18 to 30 years.
  • Graduate Posts: 18 to 33 years. Official relaxations apply natively: 3 years extra for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 5 years extra for SC/ST candidates.

Medical Standards

Medical standards are strict here. And even if you clear CBT 1, CBT 2, and the psychological tests, you will be disqualified by the railway doctors if you don’t fulfill medical standards.

The Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM) has specific standards for each post.

If you want to be a Station Master or a Goods Train Manager, you must pass the A-2 medical standard.

This means your distant vision must be 6/9, 6/9 completely without glasses.

Furthermore, Lasik surgery is strictly banned for A-2 posts. The doctors have machines to detect corneal scars, and if they find it, you are banned.

If you wear glasses, you can still apply for clerical posts (like Junior Clerk or Ticket Clerk) which require B-2 or C-2 medical standards, allowing glasses up to a certain power. Read the medical annexure before you set your post preferences.

Selection Process

The RRB NTPC selection process is designed to filter out millions of candidates. It is a lengthy multi-stage system.

CBT 1 (First Stage Computer Based Test)

This is purely a screening exam. It’s 100 questions (Math, Reasoning, General Awareness) in 90 minutes. Your score here doesn’t build your final merit; it just decides if you get a ticket to the next round.

Note that there is a strict 1/3rd negative marking for every wrong answer. May subject to change for 2026.

CBT 2 (Second Stage Computer Based Test)

The score in this exam decides your actual job. The RRB calls candidates for CBT 2 at a rate of 20 times the number of vacancies.

You get 120 questions in 90 minutes. Here is the catch: If you applied for posts across Level 2, Level 3, Level 5, and Level 6, you have to sit for a separate CBT 2 exam for each pay level.

The difficulty of the paper matches the pay level.

Typing Skill Test

If you applied for Typist or Accounts Clerk roles, you must pass this.

It is qualifying in nature, meaning the marks don’t add to your total, but if you fail, you lose the post. You need to type 30 Words Per Minute (WPM) in English or 25 WPM in Hindi on a computer, without any spell-check or editing tools.

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)

This is only for the Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts.

It is a psychological test that checks your spatial reasoning, reaction time, and decision-making.

You must secure a minimum T-Score of 42 in every single test battery.

There is no negative marking, but no community relaxation either. Your final merit for Station Master is 70% of your CBT 2 score and 30% of your CBAT score.

DV and Medical

After passing the exams, you undergo Document Verification.

Your caste certificates must exactly match the central government annexure formats provided in the CEN. Immediately after DV, you are sent to the railway hospital for the medical checks.

Salary

Let’s talk about the actual money. The railways operate on the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) matrix. With the implementation of 8th CPC which is under consideration, the salary may be revised.

Pay Levels

  • Level 2 (Junior Clerk, Trains Clerk): Basic Pay ₹19,900.
  • Level 3 (Commercial cum Ticket Clerk): Basic Pay ₹21,700.
  • Level 5 (Goods Train Manager, Senior Clerk): Basic Pay ₹29,200.
  • Level 6 (Station Master, Commercial Apprentice): Basic Pay ₹35,400.

Allowances

The Basic Pay is just the start. You get Dearness Allowance (DA), which is revised periodically based on government rates.

You also get House Rent Allowance (HRA) which scales from 9% to 27% depending on whether you live in a rural station or a metro city.

In-hand Salary

A Level 2 clerk generally takes home around ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 initially.

However, a Level 6 Station Master or a Level 5 Goods Train Manager takes home significantly more—often crossing ₹55,000 to ₹70,000—because they receive Night Duty Allowances and heavily lucrative running/mileage allowances for operating trains.

How to Apply

I am going to advise you as a friend: do not let a guy at a cyber cafe fill this out for you. I have seen applications rejected because an operator typed a date of birth wrong.

  1. Open the official RRB website for your specific zone (e.g., rrbmumbai.gov.in).
  2. Click the link for “CEN NTPC Recruitment 2026 – Apply Online.”
  3. Read the official PDF instructions completely.
  4. Create your account. You must use an email ID and mobile number that you own and will keep active for the next three years. The RRB does not send physical letters anymore; everything is via SMS and email.
  5. Complete the Aadhar Verification.
  6. Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your 10th standard board certificate.
  7. Select your post preferences very carefully based on your medical fitness (remember the A-2 vs C-2 rule).
  8. Upload your photograph. It must have a plain white background, no sunglasses, no caps, and your face must take up 50% of the image. Upload your signature in black or blue ink (no block letters).
  9. Pay the fee online via UPI or card (₹500 for UR/OBC, ₹250 for SC/ST/Female/Ex-Servicemen).
  10. Submit and physically print the confirmation page for your records.

FAQ on RRB NTPC

What is RRB NTPC?

RRB NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories. It is a massive recruitment drive by the Indian Railways to hire staff for operational and administrative roles that do not require an engineering or technical background, such as Station Masters, Ticket Clerks, and Goods Train Managers.

No, it is not mandatory for all posts. The typing test is strictly required only if you apply for specific clerical roles like Junior Clerk cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist, or Accounts Clerk.
