RRB Section Controller Recruitment 2026: Eligibility, Salary, Work Profile, CBAT & Career Growth

RRB Section Controller Recruitment 2026 is now open under CEN 03/2026.

The Railway Recruitment Boards have notified 119 posts across India.

Online applications run from 15 July 2026 to 14 August 2026.

A Section Controller sits in the divisional control office. This officer tracks every train moving on a section and decides which train moves first.

This recruitment is not like ALP, Technician, Group D, or NTPC. It is a direct graduate entry into train operations control at Pay Level 6. Very few railway posts open at this level for fresh graduates.

The Section Controller is responsible for safe and smooth train movement across an entire section. One weak decision can delay many trains.

That is why the selection adds an aptitude test (CBAT) and one of the strictest eye standards in Indian Railways. For more information about various railway jobs, visit our Railway Jobs in India Section.

Why Section Controller Is Different From Other Railway Jobs

This role stands out from typical railway jobs in several ways.

  • A pure desk job: You work entirely inside a centralized control room. You do not travel with trains or stand on platforms.
  • High impact decisions: You make choices that affect dozens of trains at once. Your instructions guide drivers and station staff safely.
  • No public dealing: You do not face passengers or sell tickets. Your only contacts are other railway employees over the radio.
  • Centralized work location: You work at a divisional headquarters. This means you do not face frequent transfers to remote roadside stations.
  • Continuous communication: You talk with Station Masters and train crews all day. You use phones and control panels to track every train.

What Does a Railway Section Controller Actually Do?

A Section Controller watches the live position of trains on a display screen. You decide which goods train to stop so a fast express train can pass.

If a train breaks down, you plan an alternate route. If a track needs repair, you block that section and reroute traffic. You coordinate with multiple stations at the same time to prevent accidents and delays.

Who Should Consider This Job?

This job rewards calm minds that decide fast. It punishes hesitation.

Suitable for:

  • Graduates from any stream who want an operations career, not a technical trade. Your degree subject stops mattering here; your decisions are what get judged every shift.
  • People who stay calm under time pressure and can hold many moving details in mind. A controller often juggles ten or more trains at once, and the picture changes every few minutes.
  • Candidates comfortable with rotating shifts, including nights, since control offices never close. Trains run at 3 a.m. too, and someone has to direct them.
  • Candidates with naturally sharp eyesight who can pass the A-2 standard without glasses. Prepare hard for CBT only after this box is ticked, because no study effort can fix a failed eye test.

Not suitable for:

  • Anyone who wears glasses, has weak vision, or has undergone LASIK or similar eye surgery. The CEN bars corrective surgery outright, so this is a hard stop, not a grey area.
  • Those who want a fixed day schedule or a slow-paced desk routine. The chair may be a desk chair, but the pace is closer to a live match than paperwork.

Selection Process of RRB Section Controller

The recruitment moves through four stages, as per the official notification:

  • Step 1: Online application on your chosen RRB website (15.07.2026 to 14.08.2026).
  • Step 2: Computer Based Test (CBT) — a single screening exam.
  • Step 3: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — 8 times the vacancies are shortlisted from CBT merit.
  • Step 4: Document Verification and Medical Exam — candidates equal to the vacancies are called, based on combined merit (70% CBT + 30% CBAT).

Clear one stage, and the next one tests something different. The CBT tests knowledge; the CBAT tests the mind’s fitness for control work.

 CBT

The single-stage CBT has 100 questions. You get 120 minutes to finish the exam. The railway board deducts 1/3 of a mark for every wrong answer.

The exam tests three main areas:

  • Analytical and Mathematical Capability (60 Questions): This includes basic math, geometry, data analysis, and reading comprehension.
  • Logical Capability (20 Questions): This covers syllogisms, blood relations, and logic-based puzzles.
  • Mental Reasoning (20 Questions): This tests number series, analogies, and coding-decoding.

CBAT

The CBAT is a psychological test given only in English and Hindi. There is no negative marking here.

You have to secure a minimum T-Score of 42 in each of the test batteries. No category relaxations apply to this score. The final merit list takes 70% of your CBT marks and 30% of your CBAT marks.

Why Section Controller Requires CBAT

Your reaction time keeps trains from crashing. The CBAT proves your brain can process signals fast. It tests if you can handle the mental stress of live traffic control without making errors.

Medical Standards of RRB Section Controller

The medical test for this role is very strict. You have to pass the A-2 medical standard.

You need 6/9 distant vision without glasses. Your near vision needs to be Sn 0.6 without glasses. The doctors will also test your color vision, binocular vision, and night vision.

You have to bring an eye specialist certificate (Annexure VI) just to sit for the CBAT. If you have had Lasik surgery, you are not eligible.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make

  • Focusing only on salary: Many ignore the high-stress nature of night shifts and traffic control.
  • Hiding Lasik surgery: The medical board uses advanced machines to detect eye surgeries. You will face rejection if you hide it.
  • Uploading bad photos: The application requires a live webcam photo. Wearing glasses or standing in bad light will get your form rejected.
  • Not verifying Aadhaar: The railway board strongly advises using DigiLocker or Aadhaar verification. Skipping this leads to stricter checks later.
