Zone-wise Vacancies You can only submit an application to one RRB zone.
And once you submit, you cannot request of change of zone so you should carefully choose your RRB Zone.
So, you need to open the official CEN annexure, find your specific category (UR, SC, ST, OBC, EWS), look at the exact number of seats in your specific ITI trade for that zone, and make a calculated decision.
Usually you get a month of time during which the application is open, so choose your zone carefully with all consideration. For a detailed zone-wise, trade-wise, and category-wise vacancy breakdown, see our RRB Technician Grade 1 & Grade 3 Vacancy Analysis 2026 guide.
Eligibility
These are the eligibility requirements of RRB Technician so go through them carefully.
ITI Qualification (For Grade 3) You must have passed Matriculation (10th standard) and possess an ITI certificate granted by NCVT or SCVT in the specific trade mentioned in the notification (like Fitter, Welder, Electrician, Machinist, etc.).
Alternatively, you can have a completed Act Apprenticeship in those trades. A simple 10th pass or a random arts degree don’t make you eligible.
Diploma / Degree Eligibility (For Grade 1 Signal) For the Grade 1 Signal post, the rules are different.
You need a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Instrumentation.
Alternatively, a 3-year Diploma in Engineering or a B.Tech/B.E. in those exact streams is fully acceptable.
Technical Trades You cannot mix and match your trades. If you have an ITI in Welding, you cannot apply for a Technician Grade 3 Electrical post.
You must apply strictly for the vacancies that match your exact NCVT/SCVT certificate.

Selection Process
The selection process involves following steps.
CBT (Computer Based Test) Unlike the ALP exam which has two stages of CBT, the Technician recruitment now typically relies on a single stage CBT.
For Grade 1, it’s a 100-mark paper covering General Awareness, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Basic Computers and Applications, Mathematics, and Basic Science & Engineering.
For Grade 3, it’s also a 100-mark paper, but the focus is heavily on Mathematics (25 marks), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25 marks), General Science (40 marks), and General Awareness (10 marks).
Important: There is a negative marking of 1/3rd for every wrong answer. If you don’t know the answer, do not guess.
Document Verification (DV) If you clear the CBT cut-off, you get called for DV.
Bring your original 10th mark sheet, your original ITI/Degree certificates, and your caste certificate.
Your OBC-NCL or SC/ST certificate must be in the exact annexure format provided at the end of the official RRB notification PDF. Don’t prepare the certificates in your format. Follow the RRB format only.
Medical Examination Right after DV, they send you to a Railway Hospital.
Depending on your specific Technician post, you will be evaluated against B-1, B-2, or C-1 medical standards.
For instance, B-1 requires your distant vision to be 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses, but you must pass the test for Color Vision.
If you are color blind, you will be disqualified for any post requiring a B-1 standard.
Read the medical annexure in the notification carefully before choosing your post preferences.
