Railway Recruitment Board Ranchi was established as Railway Service Commission, Ranchi in 1973. Initially, it functioned as a branch office of the Railway Service Commission, Calcutta.
In 1981, Railway Service Commission Ranchi was brought under the administrative control of Railway Service Commission Patna.
Later, in 1984, Railway Service Commission Ranchi was authorized to function independently for railway recruitment, particularly to recruit candidates from Scheduled Tribe communities.
In 1985, all Railway Service Commissions were renamed as Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). Following this change, Railway Service Commission Ranchi was renamed as Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Ranchi.
Since then, RRB Ranchi has been functioning under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India.
