In 1983, the Ministry of Railways established seven new Railway Service Commissions (RSCs), including the Railway Service Commission at Jammu–Srinagar, which was later renamed the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Jammu–Srinagar in 1985.

It was the nineteenth Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to be formed among the 21 RRBs in India. Both gazetted and non-gazetted railway officials are entrusted with conducting the recruitment process for advertised Group ‘C’ posts.
